Do you know that once your dog assumes a dominant attitude it can be tremendously tough to cure him? Even if a lot of dog owners resort to punishment, there is no certainty that the dog will behave and can be trusted, especially in the company of children.

Basic training for aggressive dogs should be to reward them when they show good behavior but withold the reward for any aggressive behavior.

An aggressive dog will not tolerate handling and petting and will react to this as threatening behavior. Any physical limitation or
contact on the dog can be perceived as threatening.

Dog owners should always take care whenever they want to fondle their dog. It is better if you can have your pet sit and heel before any handling takes place.

When taking the dog outside, he will be excited at the prospect of a walk and stimulation, so it is best to put on his leash while still indoors. These small tasks may be overlooked often because they do not appear to have anything to do with dog aggression, however by

doing these you are laying the foundation or setting the rules that you are the one in charge.

Never confuse your dog. You have to be consistent with your rewards and criticisms. These will reinforce his perception about acceptable behavior. Take note of any signs that will trigger aggression on your pet's part.

If your dog is posessive about any part of the house (except his own bed) you must make him realize that he has no prior right to any area.

While training your dog for the correct behavior, have one member of your family to supervise the dog while keeping the other members at a distance from the dog. With this approach, will he accept his status in the hierarchy and will not show any dominant tendencies. Dogs by the way do not try to dominate those whom they need to rely on.

You must be the Alpha Dog, because if you're not, then he will be! Every dog is conscious of his position in his group, even as a puppy and will seek the highest place that he can attain. He will also tend to be aggressive to strangers and other dogs, as he will see it as part of his job to look after the members of his pack.

Counteracting this dominant attitude is obviously best done when the dog is still a puppy. Curing this in an adult dog requires expert help. And you can get it for FREE if you know where to look.

For any signs of submission and a desire to please, always be ready to reward your pet.

Finally, if you are unable to give the time and committment to eliminate your dog's unacceptable behavior, it may be better for you and the dog to find him a new owner, who will be capable of establishing himself as the alpha dog.

However, before things get to that stage, take some expert advice from the many sources available on the internet. It doesn't have to cost a lot, in money or time, as long as you are patient and persistent.

Having a happy, friendly, obedient dog will be worth all the effort!
